1000 Miles to Light Australia - 2021 Recap

In 2020, the world changed forever. The challenges of social distancing, self-isolation, and lockdowns were tough for us all. Many are still facing the challenges of the pandemic.

1000 Miles to Light was a mission to inspire and reconnect.

Two international teams tackled running 1000 miles in just 10 days, crossing terrain that tested limits of endurance, commitment, and determination. The mission was to stimulate hope and resilience and raise awareness and funds for a youth mental health service in Australia, ReachOut.

Team USA was myself, Dean KarnazesSamantha Pruitt, and Shan Riggs.

A little about me and my why...

Hi! I’m Katie Visco! In 2009, promoting the importance of a bold and passion-driven life, I ran 3,132 miles solo across America, from Boston to San Diego, and became the 2nd youngest and 13th woman overall to make the crossing at age 23.

In 2019, ten years after I ran across America, I ran 2,112 miles across Australia. Instead of the ease of using vehicle support, my husband Henley Phillips supported on a bicycle, pedaling about 350 pounds of food, water, and gear at a time. Our trek became the first-ever bicycle-supported run across any country! We started in Darwin and finished in Adelaide 119 days later, followed mostly dirt roads, and experienced the isolation, fierceness, and beauty of the Outback.

I ran across the Outback because I had had a call in my heart to do so for over ten years; I wanted to step into my own bravery once again by doing something that I wasn’t 100% certain I could do. And, although it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I did it. I hope my example gives you the courage to follow your curiosities and the nudge to make your dreams real. Your dreams are always worth living.

Below is also a little video about why I set out across the Outback.
